How to Literally™
Isn't it time
to learn how
reading works?
Why can reading be so difficult
and boring?
Why do I lose my place? Or forget what’s been said?
What is it that "good readers" understand that I don't?
reading well
/ ‘rē• diŋ ‘wel / verb: reading with comprehension, know-how, speed, and satisfaction.
Hi. I’m your reading teacher, Mr. Stowell.
I’ve got a secret. I’m not a natural reader. But I do know how to read well.
As a student, from elementary school through college, reading intimidated me. Words on a page didn’t make sense in my head. Reading increasingly felt like a monumental task, and I was a master of all the tricks to avoid it and still get the grade.
But my real learning suffered. Regardless of grades, I was behind.
Then I learned how reading worked. By studying the science of reading and the successes - and failures - of reading education, I discovered that reading mastery isn’t something we’re born with. It has to be taught. For a over decade as a researcher, tutor, and public school teacher, I’ve been doing just that: teaching students, young and old, how to read well... for school, for standardized tests, for business, for life.
Now it's your turn to learn how reading works. With customized, one-on-one lessons, you will read text faster, with better comprehension, and with more interest and enjoyment than you ever thought possible. Best of all, these skills literally improve with every page. Once you “get” reading, you've got it for life.
Let’s get reading.
It’s what I do.
The literal approach...
One-on-one, customized coaching of the complete How to Literally™ reading system.
Focus on comprehension
Comprehension is the key ingredient to reading well. Every lesson puts understanding what you read, and how, front and center.
Science and research
Neuroscience reveals that the brain does not handle reading easily. Guided by the latest research, you’ll take the headache out of reading by working with your brain, not against it.
Learn the patterns
Written material follows reliable patterns. Once you learn to recognize these patterns, you'll find it is far easier to process text, no matter how difficult.
Continual improvement
Reading well is a skill learned for life, and continues to improve with time, making you a faster, more confident reader with every page.
... for the whole family.

“Dan has changed the way our family reads. When my kids told me ‘I get it now,’ I wanted to learn what they had. I loved reading before, but I challenge myself more and now I remember what I've read. We all just appreciate it more… a very gifted instructor.”
